India integrates AI into school curriculum to address generative AI rise

India's education system is facing a transformation as generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini change how students interact with knowledge. Students are increasingly using AI for personalized, interactive learning, which challenges the traditional role of teachers as the primary gatekeepers of information.

To address this shift, the Indian Ministry of Education, in collaboration with CBSE and NCERT, plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking into the curriculum starting from Class 3 in 2026. This aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to use AI to personalize learning and bridge educational gaps through existing platforms like DIKSHA, SOAR, and SWAYAM.

While AI offers benefits such as instant feedback, quiz generation, and language translation, it presents significant challenges. These include potential biases in training data, concerns regarding academic honesty, and the risk of widening the digital divide between well-resourced private schools and government schools. Experts note that while AI can provide information, it lacks the ability to mentor students, manage classroom dynamics, or provide emotional support.
