India intensifies women's safety through enforcement and policy

Authorities in India are intensifying efforts to enhance women's safety through both direct enforcement and policy directives. In Cyberabad, the Women and Child Protection Wing conducted an extensive campaign between August 15 and 21. During this period, the ‘She Team’ executed 109 decoy operations to target individuals behaving indecently toward women, resulting in 18 arrests. Additionally, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit rescued two victims and arrested four suspects, while family counseling efforts successfully reunited 32 families.

On a policy level, Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, addressed a workshop organized by the Commission and the Maharashtra Police titled ‘Shakti va Suraksha’. Rahatkar emphasized a ‘zero tolerance’ policy toward crimes against women and urged police officers to handle victims with extreme sensitivity and without prejudice. She highlighted the growing threat of cybercrimes involving artificial intelligence, such as deepfakes and digital fraud, calling for increased technical training and better coordination between police, protection officers, and legal aid services.
