India warns citizens against joining Russian armed forces

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a fresh advisory strongly discouraging Indian nationals from joining the Russian armed forces. The warning comes amid ongoing reports of recruitment during the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the MEA, many individuals are being lured by unverified job offers, social media recruitment, or promises of significant financial benefits. Some citizens reportedly join with the expectation that the Indian government will later intervene to secure their release, a path the ministry describes as a ‘dangerous path’ involving ‘mortal dangers.’

The advisory also highlights cases where individuals have attempted to renounce their Indian citizenship and obtain Russian passports to enlist. The government has noted that recruitment is being conducted by non-public entities and voluntary groups.

Data indicates that as of September 2026, 227 Indian citizens have been recruited into the Russian military, resulting in 51 deaths and 139 repatriations.
