India issues alerts on fake KYC messages and loan app scams

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) warned the public about fake KYC update SMS and WhatsApp messages that claim bank accounts will be closed unless immediate action is taken. Fraudsters send links that lead to counterfeit banking sites and request personal details such as OTPs, PINs and passwords. The RBI advised people to verify any KYC request only through official bank channels, avoid clicking unknown links, and report suspicious messages.

Kerala Police also issued a warning about fraudulent loan applications circulated via social media, SMS and fake websites. These apps request Aadhaar, PAN, bank details and other documents, install malicious software, and later demand fees under false pretenses. Victims are urged to download loan apps only from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, use RBI‑authorised lenders, refrain from sharing sensitive information, and report incidents to the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
