India issues high wave and swell surge warnings for Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) have issued warnings for high waves and swell surges affecting the coasts of Kerala, Lakshadweep, South Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.

High-period swells originating in the southern Indian Ocean are expected to cause wave surging and potential inundation in low-lying coastal areas through August 20. Swell waves are projected to rise between 1.1 and 2.2 metres, posing risks of coastal erosion and nearshore surging. Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and have prohibited the operation of small fishing vessels and beach activities.

In Kerala, a red alert has been issued due to expected rough sea conditions and squally winds reaching up to 65 kmph. Additionally, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in the Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts, with light to moderate showers expected across other districts over the next four days. Residents are warned of potential landslides, mudslides, and disruptions to power infrastructure and traffic due to waterlogging and falling trees.
