India joins NASA Moon Base program as space ambitions grow

NASA has formally invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its Moon Base program. This collaboration, framed within the Artemis Accords, aims to establish a permanent human presence near the lunar south pole by approximately 2030. The location was selected for its sunlight exposure and water ice deposits, which are vital for sustaining human life.

Participation in the program is expected to provide India with access to advanced technologies and deep-space mission experience. This strategic move positions India as a central player in global lunar exploration and supports its broader ambitions for human spaceflight.

Separately, ISRO officials have emphasized that docking technology is a critical component for future lunar and human space missions. Successful docking experiments are essential for returning lunar samples to Earth and for the assembly of the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), India’s planned five-module space station.
