India Men's Hockey Team exits World Cup after 3-5 loss to Argentina
The Indian men's hockey team has been eliminated from the FIH Hockey World Cup following a 3-5 defeat to Argentina in Amstelveen. To reach the semi-finals, India required a victory by at least three goals, a target rendered impossible by Argentina's rapid start, which included two goals within the first six minutes.
Argentina's goals were scored by Joaquin Toscani, Nicolas Della Torre, Tomas Domene (two), and Lucas Toscani. India's scoring efforts came from Sukhjeet Singh, who netted twice, and Hardik Singh, who converted a penalty stroke. The loss extends India's drought for a World Cup podium finish, which dates back to 1975.
The campaign has sparked intense criticism from former players and officials. Former goalkeeper PR Sreejesh demanded accountability from team management, questioning whether the national program prioritizes winning over merely playing attractive hockey. He urged authorities to stop labeling disappointing results as ‘learning experiences.’ Similarly, former captain Viren Rasquinha warned that upcoming success at the Asian Games might mask deep-seated issues regarding fitness, selection, tactics, and squad depth.
