India launches Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 to boost ornamental fisheries
The Vice-President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, attended a fisheries outreach programme in Agatti, Lakshadweep, aimed at strengthening the nation’s blue economy. During the event, he released ‘Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031’, a strategic action plan designed to develop and regulate the ornamental fisheries sector.
The Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 initiative seeks to transform the breeding, rearing, and trading of decorative fish into a globally competitive industry. Key components of the plan include establishing standardized operating procedures for broodstock management, implementing biosecurity and quality frameworks, and creating end-to-end traceability systems to prevent the illegal capture of endangered reef fauna.
The program also focuses on cluster-based value chain integration and livelihood support, specifically targeting coastal fishers, youth, and women-led self-help groups. By aligning with existing schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, the government aims to build specialized infrastructure for production, processing, and export logistics.
