India launches MRM portal for cybercrime refund claims

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, has launched the Mobile Restoration Module (MRM) to assist victims of cyber fraud in reclaiming stolen funds. This new sub-portal is integrated into the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP).

The MRM allows victims to file refund requests from home, provided the fraudulent amount has already been frozen in the perpetrator's bank account following a report via the 1930 helpline or the NCRP.

Refund procedures vary based on the amount involved. For frozen amounts under 50,000 rupees, a police complaint may suffice without requiring an FIR or court order. However, if a single bank account holds more than 50,000 rupees in frozen funds, victims must file an FIR and obtain a court order before requesting a refund through the portal.
