India launches NVS-03 satellite to strengthen NavIC system

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the NVS-03 satellite aboard the GSLV-F18 rocket. This mission is a critical step in enhancing NavIC, India’s regional satellite navigation system designed to provide an alternative to global systems like GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS.

Currently, the NavIC constellation requires at least four functional satellites to provide full positioning services. The NVS-03 satellite will serve as the fourth functional unit, expanding coverage across India and a 1,500 km radius beyond its borders. The satellite features an indigenous atomic clock and emits an L1 signal, which allows for integration into more affordable consumer devices such as smartwatches.

The launch follows previous technical challenges, including the failure of the NVS-02 mission and issues with earlier satellites. By strengthening the constellation, India aims to reduce its strategic dependence on foreign navigation systems and bolster national security, defense, and civilian applications including transport, disaster management, and agriculture.
