India has launched the ORV Sagar Manthan, an advanced indigenous ocean research vessel designed to bolster the nation's maritime capabilities and blue economy ambitions. Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the vessel was developed under the Deep Ocean Mission at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 840 crore.

The vessel is engineered as an all-weather platform capable of operating in extreme environments, including the Southern Ocean, and has a projected service life of 30 years. It is intended to replace the 43-year-old ORV Sagar Kanya. The ship features advanced technology such as dynamic positioning, multibeam bathymetry, and facilities to deploy Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV).

Key research objectives include conducting deep-sea surveys, seismic and geophysical studies, and exploring the Indian Ocean’s mid-ocean ridges for multi-metal hydrothermal sulphide mineralisation. The vessel will also support studies related to climate change, disaster preparedness, and environmental protection.
