India launches six-month bridge course for primary teachers

Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has launched a six-month Certificate (Bridge) Course in Primary Teacher Education (PTE) in New Delhi. Administered through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), the program is designed for in-service primary school educators who hold a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree but require formal certification to teach students in Classes I to V.

The curriculum follows the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) framework and includes six theory courses, a minimum of ten days of online contact classes, and at least twenty days of school-based experience. The course aims to enhance pedagogical competencies through child-centered, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate teaching methodologies, utilizing tools such as reflective journals, portfolios, and digital learning resources.

This initiative aligns with a Supreme Court of India ruling from April 2024, providing a professional development pathway for teachers to bridge the gap between their current qualifications and the requirements for primary-level instruction.
