India lifts LPG cylinder price as global energy costs rise
The Indian government raised the price of a 14.2‑kg domestic LPG cylinder by ₹29, bringing the Delhi rate to ₹942 as of June 7. This is the second increase in three months and follows similar hikes in other major cities. The hike is intended to offset losses faced by state‑owned oil marketing companies, which lose roughly ₹703 per cylinder sold at the new price.
International LPG costs have risen about 46 % since February due to supply disruptions from the Gulf region, pushing the delivery cost of a cylinder above ₹1,600. The government announced a reduction in the number of subsidised cylinders under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from nine to four per year and approved ₹30,000 crore in compensation to oil firms. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said the increase was inevitable given the global situation.
