Global wheat markets face volatility amid Black Sea disruptions and India's export reopening

The global wheat market is experiencing significant volatility driven by logistical disruptions in the Black Sea and shifts in major exporting nations. Conflict-related damage to ports and infrastructure in Ukraine has reduced its export capacity by approximately one third, causing wheat prices on the Chicago exchange to hit a three-year high.

In response to these tensions, India has lifted its four-year ban on wheat exports, with an estimated production of 120.65 million tonnes for the 2025-2026 season. This move is expected to increase global supply and potentially ease price pressures.

Romania remains a dominant force, maintaining its position as the largest wheat exporter in the European Union. While the country anticipates record harvests—with some estimates reaching 13.4 million tonnes—economists highlight a structural paradox: Romania exports large quantities of low-cost raw grain while importing expensive processed food products. In the first half of 2026, the trade deficit between food/live animal imports and exports exceeded 2.2 billion euros.
