India mandates BIS certification for smartphone screen protectors

The Indian government has introduced new regulations for smartphone screen protectors, making Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatory. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notification on September 21, 2026, amending the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.

Effective April 1, 2027, all screen protectors sold in India must comply with the IS 19348:2025 standard. This regulation covers specific technical requirements, including glass thickness, dimensions, strength, adhesive layers, anti-shatter films, oleophobic coatings, anti-glare properties, and privacy film features. It also mandates testing for light transmission and clarity.

The move aims to eliminate low-quality, unbranded products from the market and improve consumer safety. Additionally, the rules require standardized packaging that includes the manufacturer's name, batch number, and product thickness. The government has provided this transition period to allow manufacturers and importers to align their products with the new quality control measures.
