Vietnam-India trade sees surge in meat imports and plastic exports
Vietnam has seen significant shifts in trade with India during the first half of the year. Meat imports from India reached approximately 108,000 tons, valued at nearly $463 million, with frozen buffalo meat making up the bulk of these shipments. This high volume is driven by competitive pricing and a domestic buffalo population that currently meets only about half of the local demand.
Simultaneously, Vietnam's plastic raw material exports to India have experienced massive growth, with volume increasing by 189% and value by 186% compared to the same period last year. In the first seven months, plastic exports to India exceeded 211,000 tons, valued at over $229 million.
However, the influx of imported meat has raised food safety concerns. Authorities have identified instances where imported Indian buffalo meat was mislabeled as domestic specialty products, such as Northwest Vietnamese buffalo meat. Recent investigations in Dong Nai province uncovered a ring involving Tran Le Foods that processed imported buffalo meat into products sold as beef jerky.
