UPI marks 10 years of digital payment revolution in India

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completed 10 years of operation, marking a significant milestone in India's digital economy. Launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the platform has seen exponential growth.

According to the Union Finance Ministry, annual transaction volumes surged nearly 13,000-fold, rising from 1.78 crore in FY 2016-17 to over 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26. Similarly, annual transaction value increased more than 4,000-fold, from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to approximately Rs 314 lakh crore during the same period. In July 2026, the network processed a record 2,365.8 crore transactions worth Rs 29.87 lakh crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the system as a 'major turning point' for the nation, noting its immense scale and reach. The platform's influence has expanded globally; it is currently accepted in 11 countries, including recent additions like Greece and the Maldives. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognized UPI as the world's largest real-time payment system by transaction volume, noting that it accounted for nearly 49 per cent of global real-time payment transaction volume in 2024/2025.

The ecosystem has also grown significantly, with the number of participating banks increasing from 21 at launch to over 700 by 2026. Recent technological advancements include on-device authentication via fingerprint or face unlock introduced in 2025.
