India Meteorological Department installs new weather radars in Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), operating under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is installing two advanced weather radars in Kerala. An X‑Band Doppler Weather Radar is being set up at Pulpally in Wayanad district; the site was provided by Pazhassi Raja College and the project is coordinated with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. The radar, covering a radius of about 100 km, is slated for commissioning by the end of December 2026 and will improve monitoring of heavy rainfall and cloudburst events.

In addition, an S‑Band weather radar is being installed in Neendakara, Kollam district, to enhance cyclone tracking and rainfall forecasting along the Arabian Sea coast. The location was identified by the state revenue department, and the equipment is being supplied by the company Data Pattern. The new installation will overlap with existing radar coverage from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, providing more accurate warnings for coastal communities and fishermen.
