India Ministry of Defence signs ₹586 crore tank power unit contract

The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹586 crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited to procure indigenously developed Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks.

Signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the procurement falls under the Make-II category, which promotes industry-led research and development. The APUs serve as an alternative electrical power source for critical onboard systems, including fire control, firing circuits, and gun stabilisation systems. By allowing these systems to operate without running the tank's large main engine, the units improve fuel efficiency, reduce engine wear, and lower the vehicle's acoustic and thermal signatures.

The initiative is part of India’s broader strategic push for ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defence manufacturing and aligns with the ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision. The induction of these locally made components aims to enhance the operational readiness and sustainability of the Army’s mechanised formations while reducing dependence on imported technology for legacy Soviet-designed platforms.
