DRDO signs quantum tech pact and IAF weapons deal

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed its first high-value deep-tech project agreement under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme with the Rajasthan-based start-up Zero mK India Private Limited. The project focuses on the indigenous development of a 20 millikelvin (mK) dilution refrigerator, a specialized cryogenic system essential for the operation and testing of quantum computing platforms.

This initiative aligns with India’s National Quantum Mission and aims to strengthen domestic capabilities in quantum technology and advanced cryogenics while reducing reliance on imported infrastructure. The agreement is part of a Rs 500 crore corpus approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to support cutting-edge technology projects through private industry and start-up collaborations.

Separately, the Ministry of Defence has signed an Rs 811 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force. Developed by DRDO, these air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapons are designed to strike enemy airfields from a stand-off range. The weapons can be integrated with Jaguar, Hawk, and Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, with deliveries expected between 2027 and 2029.
