India mobile manufacturing expands to over 300 units by 2026

India’s mobile phone manufacturing sector has undergone a significant transformation, expanding from just two manufacturing units in 2014 to more than 300 units by 2026. This growth has established the sector as a major component of the nation’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

According to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, the production value of mobile phones in India rose from approximately ₹18,000 crore in 2014 to roughly ₹6.27 lakh crore in 2026. During the same period, mobile phone exports saw a massive surge, increasing from ₹1,500 crore to approximately ₹2.60 lakh crore.

This expansion has been driven by government initiatives, including the ‘Make in India’ program and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which aim to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing and integrate India more deeply into the global mobile device supply chain.
