India modernizes Su-30MKI fleet amid joint military exercises
India is planning a major modernization of its combat aviation, focusing on the fundamental reconstruction of its Sukhoi-30MKI fleet. To meet evolving aerial combat requirements, New Delhi is looking to upgrade critical systems such as radars, electronic warfare capabilities, and long-range missile technology. This upgrade strategy involves a combination of Russian technological solutions and domestic industrial contributions to extend the service life of these heavy twin-engine fighters.
During the ‘Indra 2026’ international military exercises in the Ural region, Indian pilots participated in training sessions using Russian Su-30SM fighters. The drills included intercepting low-altitude targets, engaging aircraft with short- and medium-range missiles, and practicing maneuverable air combat.
Separately, the Indian Air Force celebrated its 94th anniversary at the Wings airshow in Varanasi. The event featured a diverse display of approximately 100 aircraft, including the Su-30MKI, MiG-29, Rafale, Mirage-2000, and the indigenous LCA Tejas, demonstrating both Russian-origin platforms and India’s growing domestic aviation capabilities.
