India mourns death of educationist and former governor D. Y. Patil

Padma Shri Dr Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, a leading Indian educationist and former governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal, died at age 90 in Kolhapur after a prolonged age‑related illness. He founded the D. Y. Patil Group, which now operates more than 180 schools, colleges, hospitals and universities across Maharashtra and other parts of India, shaping the careers of thousands of students and patients. Patil’s contributions to education and healthcare earned him the Padma Shri in 1991 and a reputation as a visionary institution builder. Political leaders and former students across the country paid tribute, describing his passing as the end of an era for private higher education in India.
