India moves to join French‑led FCAS 6th‑generation fighter program

A parliamentary defence committee reported that India’s Ministry of Defence has begun serious efforts to become part of the French‑led Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme, a 6th‑generation fighter jet development project. The committee urged the ministry to draw up a clear, time‑bound roadmap for acquiring such aircraft so the Indian Air Force does not fall behind in modern air combat capabilities.

FCAS is one of two global consortia developing 6th‑generation fighters – the other being the UK‑Italy‑Japan GCAP project. India is evaluating participation with the French‑German consortium, seeking to secure advanced technology and strengthen its domestic aerospace and defence industry.

The ministry’s outreach to the French government marks the first concrete step toward possible partnership, signalling a strategic shift in India’s defence procurement policy toward next‑generation combat aircraft.
