India MPs Question Pellet Gun and AK-47 Use on NEET Protesters

Student protests against alleged NEET exam paper leaks on July 25 escalated into violent clashes in Siwan, Bihar. Video footage prompted claims that police deployed pellet‑gun fire and even AK‑47 rifles against demonstrators.

In Parliament, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra demanded to know who authorised the deployment of such weapons, asking whether the order came from Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah. She called for accountability and an answer to the nation. Likewise, Congress MP Pawan Khera urged the Home Minister to appear before the Lok Sabha and sought an apology from the Prime Minister, condemning what he described as an “arrogant” response by the government.

A Special Investigation Team officer, Abhishek Patel, was suspended following the video, and retired IPS officer Yashovardhan Azad filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on pellet‑gun ammunition, highlighting growing legal and political pressure over the police’s crowd‑control tactics.
