Shreyas Iyer appointed India T20I captain as teen Vaibhav Sooryavanshi makes historic squad call‑up

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Shreyas Iyer will take over as India’s T20 International captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who was also omitted from the squad. Iyer, 31, said he will lead with his own style, "won’t be under anyone’s shadow," and highlighted his IPL leadership experience.

The 16‑member squad, selected by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, will tour Ireland for two T20Is on 26 and 28 June before a five‑match series in England from 1–11 July, and will later compete in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. Notably, 15‑year‑old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was named in the squad, becoming the youngest player ever selected for India’s senior men’s team, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record. The BCCI requested Sooryavanshi’s parents travel with him to aid his adjustment.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly cautioned fans to temper expectations, urging patience as the youngster adapts to international cricket. The leadership change and the inclusion of a teenage prodigy mark a significant shift for Indian cricket ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
