India-Nepal Rail Cargo Link Opens Between Kolkata and Biratnagar

India and Nepal inaugurated a direct rail cargo service when a container train arrived at Biratnagar's Integrated Check Post (ICP) from Kolkata. The train, carrying 40 containers of mustard and other goods, marks the first time a cargo train has reached Biratnagar directly under the bilateral trade and transit pact, expanding rail freight beyond the previously sole Birgunj route.

Officials say the new service will cut transport times to roughly 24 hours, lower logistics costs, and improve supply‑chain efficiency for eastern Nepal. An electronic cargo‑tracking system has been installed, and the route is expected to boost import‑export activity, strengthen economic cooperation, and provide a more reliable alternative to road transport.
