India advances major trade deals with US, EU, and New Zealand
India is advancing multiple major trade agreements, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal providing updates on negotiations with the United States and the European Union.
Regarding the India-US bilateral trade agreement, Goyal stated that while negotiations have concluded, the finalization of the first tranche is pending. India is seeking preferential tariff rates that provide a competitive advantage over other suppliers, such as Vietnam and Bangladesh. Goyal is expected to visit the US in late September for the G20 Trade Ministerial to continue these discussions.
On the India-EU front, Goyal reported that all 27 EU member states support the Free Trade Agreement. The deal is expected to provide significant opportunities for India's labor-intensive sectors, including textiles, fisheries, and footwear, while protecting sensitive domestic industries. The agreement aims to connect India to a market of approximately two billion people.
Additionally, the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is expected to take effect next month. Under this pact, 100 per cent of India's exports to New Zealand will receive duty-free entry. As part of the agreement, New Zealand has pledged to invest USD 20 billion in India over the next 15 years.
