India targets 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047

India is pursuing an ambitious goal to reach 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 to ensure long-term energy security and support its clean energy transition. Currently, the country operates 24 nuclear reactors with a total installed capacity of 8.78 GW, while nine additional units providing 7.5 GW are under construction.

To achieve this tenfold increase, the government is implementing policy initiatives such as the Nuclear Energy Mission (2025–26) and the SHANTI Act, 2025, which aims to encourage private sector participation. The expansion is estimated to require approximately $210 billion in investment. The strategy focuses on technological self-reliance and a three-stage program designed to eventually utilize India’s vast thorium reserves.

However, the expansion faces potential hurdles. New draft rules regarding foreign reactor technology have raised concerns that stricter approval requirements for imported designs could delay investment and slow the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). Industry stakeholders, including major domestic conglomerates and international firms, are awaiting final regulations before committing significant capital.
