India observes National Cancer Awareness Day

India observes National Cancer Awareness Day on November 7, a date coinciding with the birth anniversary of Marie Curie. The initiative aims to educate the public on cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of timely treatment to combat misconceptions and delays in medical consultation.

Medical experts highlight a concerning rise in oral cancer cases in India, driven by the use of tobacco, gutka, smoking, and alcohol. While cancer was previously more common in individuals over 50, there is a rising incidence among younger populations aged 30 to 40. Data from the Indian Council of Medical Research indicates that oral cancer is becoming a leading concern in the country, with two to three and a half lakh new cases reported annually.

Early detection remains critical, as approximately 75 percent of patients are currently diagnosed at stage three. Key warning signs include unexplained weight loss, persistent cough, lumps, difficulty swallowing, and non-healing wounds. Health professionals emphasize that lifestyle changes, such as avoiding tobacco, maintaining a balanced diet, and regular physical activity, are essential for reducing risk.
