India observes National Forest Martyrs Day

India observed National Forest Martyrs Day on September 11 to honor forest personnel who lost their lives while protecting the nation's forests, wildlife, and natural heritage.

In Kaziranga National Park, authorities held a ceremony at the Forest Martyrs’ Memorial Garden to pay tribute to approximately 60 personnel who died in the line of duty. These sacrifices include individuals killed during clashes with poachers, such as Boluram Dutta in 1968, as well as those who died in accidents while on duty. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also issued a tribute acknowledging their contributions to safeguarding the state's wildlife.

The day also commemorates the historical Khejarli sacrifice of 1730 in Rajasthan. During that event, members of the Bishnoi community, led by Amrita Devi, resisted the cutting of Khejri trees. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, more than 360 people were killed during that protest.
