India observes Wildlife Week with conservation initiatives
India is observing Wildlife Week, with various initiatives focused on environmental awareness and the protection of endangered species. In Nashik, approximately 100 cyclists participated in an awareness rally organized by the Social Forestry Department, the Forest Department, and Royal Riders to promote nature and wildlife conservation.
Nationwide, the theme for Wildlife Week is ‘Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife.’ In Assam, conservation efforts are highlighting the Gangetic River dolphin, the national aquatic animal. While the Brahmaputra river system remains a critical stronghold, harboring an estimated 30% of the global population, the species is currently classified as endangered. A survey by the Wildlife Institute of India estimated the population of Gangetic dolphins to be between 5,977 and 6,688.
