India: Opposition demands removal of Chief Election Commissioner

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has called for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has been manipulated by the ruling party. Gogoi accused Kumar of prioritizing loyalty to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over his constitutional duties, claiming the institution has been hollowed out of its authority.

The controversy surrounding the ECI’s credibility is creating political friction for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies. The uncertainty has raised concerns regarding trust and unity within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), particularly as the BJP relies on regional partners to maintain its political strength.

In response to these developments, the INDIA bloc is continuing its ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rallies across the country and is planning to hold a mock Parliament on October 28.
