Devdutt Padikkal hits maiden Test century as India dominates Day 1 in Galle

In the opening Test of India’s tour of Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, Devdutt Padikkal scored a maiden Test century to anchor India’s dominance on Day 1. Padikkal finished the day unbeaten on 131, marking a significant milestone in only his third Test appearance.

India, having won the toss and elected to bat, reached 288/2 at the close of play. The innings was bolstered by a 150-run partnership between Padikkal and KL Rahul. Rahul contributed 77 runs before being forced to retire hurt due to severe cramps. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 32 before being run out, and captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16. Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 27 at stumps.

The match faced multiple interruptions due to rain in both the second and third sessions. On the morning of Day 2, play was further delayed by persistent showers. India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, confirmed that Rahul is expected to be able to resume his innings on the second day.
