India pauses Peru trade talks while advancing deals with Canada, Israel and the EU

India has informed Peru that a free‑trade agreement will not proceed in the near term, citing unresolved market‑access issues for several products. Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the India‑Peru FTA is unlikely to be concluded soon.

Negotiations with Canada are moving forward, with officials planning a new round of talks aimed at sealing a comprehensive economic partnership within the next six months. Discussions with Israel continue despite the ongoing West‑Asia crisis, although the pace has slowed. In parallel, India is preparing high‑level talks in Brussels with the European Commission, focusing on the India‑EU Trade and Technology Council and a prospective free‑trade agreement that would address market access, digital trade and investment protections.

These moves are part of New Delhi’s broader strategy to prioritize larger economies and diversify export markets after recent agreements with the United Arab Emirates, Australia and the European Free Trade Association.
