India plans first cargo shipment via Russia’s Northern Sea Route in 2027

India is planning to utilize the Russian Northern Sea Route (NSR) to diversify its maritime logistics and enhance connectivity with Russia and the Eurasian continent. The nation expects to send its first cargo vessel through the Arctic waterway in 2027.

Following remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding India’s growing interest in the corridor, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that active deliberations are underway to deepen bilateral cooperation. The NSR, which traverses Russia’s Arctic coastline, offers a significantly shorter shipping distance between Europe and Asia compared to traditional routes like the Suez Canal.

India’s objective is not to replace existing global shipping lines but to establish an additional logistics option amidst an increasingly uncertain global shipping environment. This move follows similar commercial interest from China and aligns with Russia’s efforts to develop the Arctic route into a major trade link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
