India political debate intensifies over One Nation One Election proposal

Debate continues in India regarding the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. P.P. Chaudhary, Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the matter, stated that holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously would primarily benefit students by reducing the frequency of teachers being assigned election duties, which often disrupts academic schedules.

Chaudhary noted that the JPC has consulted various stakeholders, including twelve former judges, legal experts such as Kapil Sibal and Harish Salve, economists, and various state leaders. The committee aims to propose a long-term legal framework to ensure government stability and economic growth through synchronized elections and a unified voter list.

Conversely, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the agenda, suggesting it may be an attempt to distract from pressing national issues. She argued that the proposal should not be pushed by the ruling NDA alone and questioned the democratic process if the opposition is sidelined. Chaturvedi also advocated for discussions on reservation reforms and criticized the government for focusing on symbolic issues rather than addressing unemployment, inflation, and exam irregularities.
