India Post launches drone mail delivery service in Assam

India Post has launched a drone-based service to transport mail bags between branch post offices in Assam. This marks the first drone flight for postal transport in the state, aimed at making services faster and more reliable in remote and inaccessible areas.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that India Post, in collaboration with Sky Air Mobility, is starting drone services across 40 routes in Assam. This initiative is part of a larger network intended to cover a total of 150 routes across Assam and Himachal Pradesh. The service is designed to provide fast, dependable, and trackable mail delivery, particularly in difficult terrains.

A similar initiative was previously launched in Himachal Pradesh on June 12, starting with the route between Mandi Head Post Office and Rihardhar Branch Post Office. On that route, delivery time was reduced from over two hours via traditional methods to approximately seven minutes using drones. The department plans to expand these drone-based services to approximately 150 identified routes in both Himachal Pradesh and Assam within the next two to three months.
