The Ministry of Home Affairs has notified the schedule for the 2027 Census of India. The nationwide house-to-house population enumeration is set to take place from January 25 to February 28, 2027. Prior to this, a self-enumeration facility will be available to citizens from January 10 to January 24, 2027. A revisional round to verify and correct information will follow from March 1 to March 5, 2027. The official reference date for the census is fixed at 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027.

The upcoming exercise, which is the eighth since Independence, will be conducted in two phases: house listing and housing census, followed by population enumeration. A significant feature of this census will be the inclusion of comprehensive caste enumeration across all communities. The Union Cabinet has approved Rs 11,718 crore for the operation.

Certain regions are excluded from the primary schedule due to upcoming assembly elections or geographic challenges. Manipur, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh are excluded from the current timeline. Additionally, snow-bound, non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir will follow a separate schedule. In the poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Goa, self-enumeration is scheduled to begin earlier, on November 16, 2026, with door-to-door enumeration starting December 1, 2026.
