India targets increased defence production and exports by 2029

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has outlined India's strategic vision to achieve Rs 3 lakh crore in domestic defence production and Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029. Speaking at the Delhi Defence Dialogue and a Consultative Committee meeting in Jaisalmer, Singh emphasized that technological sovereignty and indigenous manufacturing are essential for national security and strategic autonomy.

To support these goals, the government has increased the defence budget for the 2026-27 financial year to a record Rs 7.85 lakh crore, which includes a capital outlay of Rs 2.19 lakh crore. Singh identified three pillars for military modernization: financial resources, indigenous technology, and trained personnel. He noted that the battlefield is expanding into space, cyberspace, and digital domains, requiring new military formations such as Ashni drone platoons, Bhairav battalions, and Shaktibaan regiments.

Additionally, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a flight test of an indigenous short-range tactical missile system off the Odisha coast on November 3, 2026. This test aims to enhance India's precision-strike capabilities. Meanwhile, reports indicate concerns regarding the Indian Air Force's fighter squadron strength as regional competitors like China and Pakistan advance toward fifth-generation aircraft capabilities.
