India proposes phased BS-VII emission norm rollout from 2029

India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a phased rollout of Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission standards, beginning in April 2029 and continuing through April 2035. The new regulations aim to tighten controls on nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and fine particulate matter to combat urban pollution.

The implementation is planned in three distinct stages. The first phase, starting in April 2029, will apply to new cars and SUVs. The second phase is expected to include small goods delivery vehicles and pickup vans by 2030. The final phase, slated for April 2031, will bring buses and heavy-duty vehicles under the new standards.

These proposed norms are expected to align with Euro 7 standards. While the timeline for two-wheelers has not been finalized, they are expected to be notified separately at a later date.
