India addresses terrorism, indigenous rights, and child marriage at UN

At the United Nations, India has raised several key positions regarding international law and human rights. During meetings of the General Assembly, Indian representatives advocated for terrorist acts that meet specific legal thresholds to be classified as crimes against humanity within upcoming international conventions. R. Mythili, a counsellor at India’s UN Mission, emphasized that such a framework must respect national sovereignty and the primacy of domestic jurisdiction.

Separately, India rejected an “unsubstantiated reference” in a UN Special Rapporteur’s report concerning indigenous land rights. The Indian government defended its record by citing the Forest Rights Act, constitutional safeguards, and various welfare programmes for tribal communities.

Additionally, the United Nations commended India’s progress in combating child marriage. Officials highlighted the impact of government initiatives and community engagement in improving rights and educational opportunities for girls.
