India pushes GST appellate deadline to July 31, 2026

On June 30, 2024, India's Finance Ministry announced that the deadline for filing appeals before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has been extended from June 30, 2026 to July 31, 2026. The decision was taken after stakeholders reported technical problems on the GSTAT portal caused by a high volume of submissions.

In the prior 15 days, roughly 30,000 appeals were lodged, with daily peaks of up to 5,500 filings, overwhelming the system. The extension, applied under sections 112(1) and 112(3) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, gives taxpayers and professionals additional time to submit appeals and avoid rejection for missing the original deadline. The ministry urged users to file early to reduce end‑period congestion.
