India raises LPG cylinder price but claims it remains cheapest worldwide

On June 7, the Indian government announced a ₹29 increase in the retail price of domestic LPG cylinders, taking the cost of a 14.2‑kg cylinder in Delhi from ₹913 to ₹942. The Petroleum Ministry said oil marketing companies (OMCs) are absorbing a loss of about ₹700 per cylinder, yet subsidies keep India’s LPG price among the lowest globally.

Comparative figures quoted by officials show a cylinder costs roughly ₹1,046 in Pakistan, ₹1,207 in Nepal, ₹1,225 in Bangladesh, and ₹1,241 in Sri Lanka, while prices in the United States, Australia and Canada exceed ₹1,750. The ministry attributed the hike to rising international energy prices driven by Middle‑East tensions, but affirmed that subsidies for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme will continue to protect consumers.

The statement emphasizes that despite the price rise, Indian households still pay less for LPG than many neighbouring and western nations.
