India raises LPG, petrol and diesel prices amid global oil surge
The Indian government increased the price of the 14‑kg domestic LPG cylinder by 29 rupees, taking the retail rate to 942 rupees, while the subsidised price under the Ujjwala scheme remains at 642 rupees. Despite the hike, officials claim India’s LPG remains cheaper than in neighboring and developed nations. The rise adds roughly 700 rupees of loss per cylinder, contributing to an under‑recovery burden that has grown to about 60 000 crore rupees.
On 9 June 2026, petrol and diesel rates were updated across major cities. In Delhi, petrol costs 102.12 rupees per litre and diesel 95.20 rupees; similar increases were reported in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and other metros. The price surge is attributed to higher international crude oil prices, the ongoing Middle‑East conflict, increased fuel taxes and a weakening rupee against the dollar.
Both the LPG and fuel price hikes reflect broader global oil market pressures and are expected to tighten household budgets across India.
