India ramps up anti‑tobacco drives on World No Tobacco Day 2026

On World No Tobacco Day 2026, Indian health officials highlighted the country's ongoing tobacco crisis, noting more than 267 million users and the link to cancers, heart disease and other serious illnesses. Dr. Priyank R. Chawathe of Wockhardt Hospitals in Mira Road, Mumbai warned that even newer products such as e‑cigarettes and nicotine pouches are gateways to lifelong addiction and serious health complications.

In parallel, the Assam Rifles, together with the Rajyoga Education & Research Foundation under Brahma Kumaris, organised a Youth Wellness & Awareness Programme in Kohima. Deputy Inspector General of the Assam Rifles (North) inaugurated an awareness rally that travelled through the city, spreading messages on tobacco cessation and healthy living. The event also launched an anti‑tobacco campaign aimed at encouraging young people to become ambassadors for a drug‑ and tobacco‑free future.
