India ramps up international sports events to boost 2036 Olympic bid

India is staging a large slate of international competitions to demonstrate its capacity to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association and the Gujarat government have outlined a calendar that includes 11 events in the next six months and a broader program of 29 events over two years, bringing the total to 65 scheduled competitions by 2028. Ahmedabad is the focal point, slated to host qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup, the Wushu Commonwealth Championship, archery para‑cup legs and other tournaments.

The push is part of a wider strategy that also sees India preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and bidding for the 2038 Asian Games. Officials say holding events domestically cuts costs, builds lasting sports infrastructure and hones technical expertise among officials and volunteers. The International Olympic Committee’s new Strategic Dialogue phase now requires detailed financial guarantees and cost‑control plans, putting pressure on India to prove readiness ahead of the IOC’s shortlist expected in 2027.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the expanded event schedule is a key pillar of India’s sporting ecosystem, aimed at convincing the IOC that the country can manage a multi‑sport spectacle on the Olympic scale.
