India reaches 132 unicorn startups as Astrotalk hits $1B valuation
India has reached a total of 132 unicorn startups as of August 2026, according to the Inc42 Indian Unicorn Tracker. These companies have collectively raised over $119 billion in funding and hold a combined valuation exceeding $394 billion. India currently maintains its position as the third-largest unicorn hub globally, trailing only the United States and China.
Recent trends indicate a shift in the ecosystem from the high-frequency funding boom of 2021 toward companies built on stronger financial fundamentals, such as revenue growth and paths to profitability. While the pace of new unicorn creation has slowed since the 2021 peak, the quality of deals has evolved. Of the 132 unicorns, 27 have transitioned to public markets through IPOs.
Astrotalk has recently become India’s 133rd unicorn through a unique mechanism. Unlike traditional unicorn status achieved via new funding rounds, Astrotalk reached a $1 billion valuation through an ESOP buyback from its employees. The company reported significant revenue growth, rising from ₹283 Cr in FY23 to ₹1,176 Cr in FY25. Founder and CEO Puneet Gupta stated that the company does not currently require external capital before its planned IPO, suggesting the business is funding its own growth.
