India records child death from Chandipura virus and school snake bite fatality

A six‑year‑old boy from Rajasthan died at the civil hospital in Himmatnagar, Gujarat, after testing positive for the Chandipura virus, a mosquito‑borne illness with a reported case‑fatality rate of 56‑75 %. Seven children aged 2‑11 had been admitted with suspected infection, and a dedicated ward was established for treatment.

In Jharkhand’s Lohardaga district, a krait entered the hostel of Sanvasira Higher Secondary Residential School and bit four female students while they slept. One 12‑year‑old girl died and the remaining three were taken to hospitals for treatment. Police are investigating how the snake accessed the room.
