India rejects UN racial discrimination committee report

India has rejected a report from the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, labeling the findings “politically motivated” and “highly malicious.” The rejection follows the country’s 11th periodic review under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), which took place in Geneva on August 11–12.

The UN Committee expressed concerns regarding reports of “large-scale violations” by law enforcement officials against various groups, including Scheduled Castes (specifically Dalits), Scheduled Tribes, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, and non-citizens. The Committee also noted concerns regarding hate speech and incidents involving Bengali-speaking Muslims.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that the review was a routine process and that India participated in the spirit of constructive engagement. An Indian delegation, led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, had already challenged what it described as “sweeping generalisations” and “unsubstantiated allegations” during the review. India maintains that its commitment to combating discrimination is unwavering and highlighted its constitutional safeguards and legal frameworks designed to protect disadvantaged communities.
